Effects of Tooth Loss
Raleigh, NC

Graphic of missing tooth at North Hills Implant & Oral Surgery in Raleigh, NCNo one wants to suffer from tooth loss. Effects of tooth loss include embarrassment, difficulties eating and chewing, to trouble pronouncing words. Fortunately, there are dental implant solutions for tooth loss. Implant supported dentures is one of these solutions.

Implant Supported Dentures

Traditional dentures may deter patients from wanting to receive dentures because of the difficulty it takes to maintain them. They move and shift and do not remain in a fixed position. It can lead to embarrassment or even injury to the supporting soft tissue structure. One potential solution to this problem is known as an overdenture. This is a denture supported by permanent dental implants. Come see us at North Hills Implant & Oral Surgery to find out more. They will not slip out of place and will remain a permanent part of your oral cavity.

Implant Types

Depending upon the needs of the patient we can recommend two different types. This will be based on our initial assessment and the needs of the patient.

The bar-retained denture is one kind of dental implant denture. A slender piece of metal is attached from the implant to the actual denture. This is done by using metal clips that can be attached to the implant.
A denture known as a stud-attachment denture is another type we highly recommend. Small sockets, or balls, are used instead of clips to make sure the dentures remain attached to the implant.

Placement of Dental Implants

One drawback to getting implant-supported dentures is they do take more than a single appointment to complete. At the first office visit, we will take a complete medical history as well as evaluate the oral cavity to create a treatment plan. If teeth need to be pulled or grafts need to be utilized to build up missing bone structure they will have to be done first. We can provide a temporary set of dentures while waiting for the healing to complete.

Step One

We can use local anesthesia to ensure the patient is comfortable while we proceed with the implant surgery. The jawbone needs to be fully exposed by making a precise incision in the gums. It allows an implant to be effectively secured to the jawbone by using screws. Once this happens, the incision is closed.

Step Two

If the implants have correctly healed and the incision has closed properly, then the gumline is incised again so the head of the implant is exposed. An abutment is secured to it and monitored for a few weeks to make sure it has properly healed too.

Once it is determined the implant has properly healed by fusing to the jawbone, the gum line will be reopened with another incision so the implant head is completely exposed. The abutment is then applied to the exposed cap and remains in place for approximately two weeks.

The Final Placement

Measurements are taken and the permanent dentures are then made to fit those specific guidelines. We can make any adjustments necessary prior to placing them.

Flossing and brushing can be done because the permanent dentures feel and look like natural teeth. It provides a permanent solution which is much better than traditional dentures.
